Homecoming: The Crane Diaries series – Book Review.

New Orleans is a city known for its paranormal history—and it’s the place Emma Rose Crane, AKA Mattie Hathaway, has come home to.

She hopes she can start over in New Orleans, where her ability to see ghosts isn’t so freaky. She’s even starting college, but the whole thing would be a lot easier if she weren’t faced with a family she barely knows, all while dealing with the loss of someone she loved.

Can she really escape her past and be semi-normal? Even with her sister Mary and best friend Eric by her side, it’s going to be a wild ride once she agrees to help Mary’s new friends investigate a “haunted” house.

The house’s new occupants are terrified, and the ghost seems to be attacking their little girl, leaving everyone desperate for answers. Emma isn’t sure what to think when she discovers Dr. Lawrence Olivet was also invited to investigate.

Will her gifts be enough to save the family that is currently being stalked in their own home? And when some of her own family’s long-kept secrets come to light, will her fresh start be over before it even begins?

Review

Copy – I have the paperback and Kindle edition (161 pages).
Published – 11/12/18
Published by – Limitless publishing.

It has been a while since I have read YA fiction. This book was sent to me for a promotional post and it caught my attention, I love ghost stories, so why not check this out. I also have to admit I liked the cover chosen for this book, it’s unique and extremely eye catching.
I found the reaper at the beginning of each chapter was a little childish, I know it is a YA, however that little detail could have been left out.

This is the first book I have ever read by Apryl Baker, her series ghost files is widely loved on Goodreads.
Emma is such a strong character growing up in foster care, with the abilities of a reaper. If that wasn’t tough enough she nearly died last year reaping a particularly difficult ghost.

I found it hard to read this book because there was obviously a bigger event in Emma’s life that I have not read. I think there must be a book prior to this one but I cannot find it unfortunately, if you can please comment below so I can add it to my review for others.

I have grown to really like Emma, she is a strong, persistent young woman, not letting her abilities prevent her from achieving a degree in psychology, with the added perk of being able to communicate with the dead effectively.

The haunting in this book is creepy and very well done. I really enjoyed the references to actual TV shows, for example Ghost adventures was used a lot. I found Apryl grew the plot throughout, gradual but effective. The description, twists, and investigations are fantastic.

I enjoyed the friends family dynamic, all there for each other through thick and thin. There is never a dull moment, each chapter revealed something new in Emma’s life as well as in the ghost investigation…… Doc isn’t just a close friend after all and with her half brother suddenly turning up, everyone becomes extremely suspicious.

Even though the book was very well done, I enjoyed reading it but I wasn’t hooked. Perhaps It is because it is not like my regular books. I would still recommend this book. And I may look into her much loved series the ghost files.

About the Author

So who am I? Well, I’m the crazy girl with an imagination that never shuts up. I LOVE scary movies. My friends laugh at me when I scare myself watching them and tell me to stop watching them, but who doesn’t love to get scared? I grew up in a small town nestled in the southern mountains of West Virginia where I spent days roaming around in the woods, climbing trees, and causing general mayhem. Nights I would stay up reading Nancy Drew by flashlight under the covers until my parents yelled at me to go to sleep.

Growing up in a small town, I learned a lot of values and morals, I also learned parents have spies everywhere and there’s always someone to tell your mama on you. So when you get grounded, what is there left to do? Read! My Aunt Jo gave me my first real romance novel. It was a romance titled “Lord Margrave’s Deception.” I remember it fondly. But I also learned I had a deep and abiding love of mysteries and anything paranormal. As I grew up, I started to write just that and would entertain my friends with stories featuring them as main characters.

Now, I live Huntersville, NC where I entertain my family and watch the cats get teased by the birds and laugh myself silly when they swoop down and then dive back up just out of reach. The cats start yelling something fierce…lol.

I love books, I love writing books, and I love entertaining people with my silly stories.

Two years ago, he took my innocence and ran,
Luckily for me, he’s a slow runner.
He doesn’t know that he gave me the most beautiful gift in the world – my son.
I’m going to give him a gift too – revenge!
And if he’s thinking he can get me and my son…
Well, he can go take a walk!

She’s my best friend’s little sister.
I should never have touched her.
But I did.
She was hot. She was fun. She was begging me for it.
So I gave it to her… all night long.
I told her I loved her. I promised her the moon and stars.
I meant every word.
Then I vanished. I couldn’t tell her why. I still can’t.
We haven’t talked since.
But I saw her yesterday. She’s still hot enough to stop traffic,
Even with a kid.
She’s got secrets, but so do I.
I know she still wants me, but she’s not begging this time.
This time she wants me to beg.
But I don’t beg. I take.
And I’m taking Jessi. Secrets and all.

Love never dies . . .
It took Lucinda an eternity to find her beloved angel, Daniel. But he waited for her. Now they are forced apart again, to protect Luce from the Outcasts – immortals who want her dead. During their separation, Luce learns about her mysterious past lives. But the more she discovers, the more she suspects Daniel is hiding something.
What if Daniel’s version of the past isn’t true?
Is it really their destiny to be together?
Or is Luce actually meant to be with someone else?

In the last city on Earth, death is just a step into the trees.

In the Blue, the world’s last city, all is not well.

Julia is stuck within its walls. She serves the nobility from a distance until she meets Lucas, who believes in fairytales that her world can’t accommodate. The Blue is her prison, not her castle, and she’d escape into the trees if she didn’t know that contamination and death awaited humanity outside.

But not everyone in the Blue is human, and not everyone can be contained.

Beyond the city’s boundaries, in the wild forests of the Red, Cameron has precious little humanity left to lose. As he searches for a lost queen, he finds an enemy rising that he thought long dead. An enemy that the humans have forgotten how to fight.

One way or another, the walls of the Blue are going to come down. The only question is what side you’ll be on when they do.

In China, the Archangel Favashi is showing the first signs of madness. In New York, a mysterious sinkhole filled with lava swallows a man whole. In Africa, torrential monsoon rains flood rolling deserts. And in Elena’s mind whispers a haunting voice that isn’t her own.

*Blogtober day 5*October TBR

I saw  a post by a fellow blogger called Kathy mentioning Owntober.  For Owntober I choose books to read of my own.  No ARCS or requests but books I want to read.  This is exciting.  Torment is a current read but taking me a little longer than planned.  So I have only added 3 books to read in October due to being a busy mum.

Torment (Fallen, #2)
How many lives do you need to live before you find someone worth dying for?

In the aftermath of what happened at Sword & Cross, Luce has been hidden away by her cursed angelic boyfriend, Daniel, in a new school filled with Nephilim, the offspring of fallen angels and humans. Daniel promises she will be safe here, protected from those who would kill her. At the school Luce discovers what the Shadows that have followed her all her life mean – and how to manipulate them to see into her other lives. Yet the more Luce learns about herself, the more she realizes that the past is her only key to unlocking her future . . . and that Daniel hasn’t told her everything. What if his version of the past isn’t actually the way things happened . . . what if Luce was really meant to be with someone else?

The second novel in the addictive FALLEN series…where love never dies.
