Review – The Love Detective

“He’d thought himself the hunter, that I was easy prey but what he hadn’t bargained for, was contending with a woman who hadn’t eaten a square meal in twenty-four hours. I get mean when I’m hungry.”

Clarry Pennhaligan, low on ambition but high on energy, can’t seem to come up with a proper grown-up plan to kick-start her life. Planning really isn’t her thing. But then she happens upon her true vocation: Snooping. Discovering other people’s secrets and getting paid for it. What could possibly go wrong? Well……as it turns out, just about everything and soon Clarry finds herself in real danger.

Review

First of I do not think this book was really for me. I thought I would give it a try because some of the previous mystery books I have read have kept me engrossed until the very end.
The love detective focuses on a 26 year old woman called Clarry who seeks to find out the truth about her best friends boyfriend, however the secrets and dangerous acts that go on behind closed doors begin to surface.

I struggled to read this book, I can’t lie. It took me 3 months in total and a complete book break. I lost enthusiasm to read, it lacked that adrenaline rush. It came across very light hearted for a good portion of the book, and then all of a sudden the plot turns dark….. I was then suddenly reading about a murder and human trafficking, all in the space of a couple chapters near the very end.
Clarry comes across chilled, and just happy plodding along in life, and then all of a sudden she turns into the best investigator going. It just lacked that fire I have read in other books from it’s genre.

The friends she meets along the way are interesting however, the author only focuses on that person for about a chapter, when really some of them seem to have a bigger part to play.

Now I am not saying it doesn’t suit some people, because on Goodreads there are some very mixed reviews and a lot are good, however for me I just couldn’t get into this book.

About DARKNESS RISING

When a bringer of death…

Awakened after millennia, dragon warrior Reaper is ready to fulfill his destiny…until he sees Greer. The dragon clan healer finds him obnoxious and annoying, but he knows a woman’s interest when he smells it. And Greer smells like one word: mine.

Greer has spent hundreds of years using her healing abilities for the good of others, making her the polar opposite of Reaper. The ferocious war general may be an ancient, but his arrogance proves he hasn’t spent any of that time learning about women. Greer is displeased when her Alpha sends her to New Orleans with the insufferable warrior—then she sees him in action against a menace threatening to tear the city apart. Fierce, protective, magnificent…mate-worthy. Except he’s hiding something from her. Something dark and devastating that could destroy their newly forged bond. EXCERPT

Few men could resist the sight of a pretty girl crying. Even if she was crying blood. She broke the silence first, her voice silken, low, a seduction in the growing dark. “What does it taste like?” He’d ceased chewing. And he wasn’t breathing again. Snap out of it, Dax. Stop thinking with your dick. Forcing himself to inhale deeply, he filled his lungs then exhaled in a smooth, slow stream through his nostrils. He tried to ignore her scent, but it had intensified upon her waking, stroking his senses. “Sour,” he replied. “Sweet.” “Sweet,” she repeated, her eyes settling on his mouth. He wasn’t any better, staring blatantly at hers. The tips of her pearly white fangs flashed every time she spoke, and God, he was supposed to be disgusted, but he was far from it. Focus.

Review

What I enjoy most about this series is it’s continuity. Each book focuses on a new perspective, a new plot, however links back to the previous characters therefor giving more depth and meaning. Vermilion lies’ plot follows Ciny/Cindel discovering herself. Cindy starts as a shy “used, tortured” soul, however by the end she is a new woman, all thanks to Dax and his guidance.

Cindel is a very tortured character, broken from years of abuse, feeling beaten and worthless. That is until she meets Dax, a hybrid with a sudden need to protect this vampire, a leech. Going against his better judgement Dax begins to find solace in this woman. However the lies and previous bonds are nothing compared to the new challenges these two now have to face.

I found this book to have a slower start than the previous two. I do not blame that on L.D Rose’ writing style, in fact the authors skilful writing has kept me engrossed from start to finish in other books she has published.
I believe the beginning was slow due to the amount of introduction, dialogue and content needed to explain Cindy/Cindel’s background, as well as the way Dax and Cindy meet.
Although slow, it was essential for the story, well thought out and structured.

About 40% of the way through I was extremely interested, the book had taken a dangerous and passionate turn. I loved the banter between Dax and his friend Kayne. My favourite part being Dax trying to impersonate an irish accent to annoy Kayne, this scene in particular even had me giggling out loud. And the banter does not stop there, Dax continues to push the buttons of his fellow “brothers” throughout the book.

Overall I enjoyed the stories behind the characters, especially Cindel. She grew so much throughout the book, not only impressing herself but her peers.
I enjoyed this book and give it a 4/5 stars. I very much loved the previous books, especially number 1 with Blaze as the lead male – this being my particular favourite.

What I recently finished

One, two, the ghosts are coming for you…
Three, four, better salt your door…
Five, six, death and hatred mix…
Seven, eight, help will come too late…
Nine, ten, never reap again…

Seventeen year old, Mattie Hathaway, has enough on her plate without having to deal with the latest teenage ghost drama. The ghosts of eight murdered girls are out for her blood. They blame Mattie for their deaths. She has to figure out what happened to them before they make sure she ends up just like them…dead and angry.

Not only that, but she has to face the greatest fear of her young life, the death of the only person she’s ever loved. Can she let nature take its course or will she interfere and cause the balance of life and death to spiral out of control?

She’s out of time, and doesn’t know if she should trust Silas, the demon who has taken a very disturbing interest in her or her father, a man just as evil as Silas.

Either way, she has to make a choice. But what will it cost her and those she loves?

What I am reading

I am currently reading an ARC version sent to me pre release date

What will I read next

Tick tock…

Mary Cross has been forced to accept the world of the supernatural because of an experience that left her with the ability to hear—but not see—the supernatural. She survived three weeks of being kidnapped and tortured, and it has left her emotionally and physically scarred.

Across the street from her house, strange things are happening…

Mysterious noises haunt the residents, faucets turn on by themselves, and footsteps can be heard running up and down the stairs. It all centers around Noah, a two year old child. Babysitters have run screaming from the house.

Caleb Malone has been dumped into a teeming hornet’s nest…

He’s always been the good son, done everything asked of him, and even gave up graduate school to join the family business of hunting supernatural villains. He’s convinced himself he’s happy, that his duty to his gift should come before anything else.

Until he meets Mary Cross.

She gives him hope that things can be different, that he can be different.

Together, the two of them must solve the mystery of the two shadows stalking the child and save him from whatever has attached itself to him. Time is running out and to save Noah, forcing Mary to face her own demons.

But in doing so…has she put a target on her back?

Review

Not only does Mattie have to deal with ghosts popping up whenever they feel like it, she is now experiencing their excruciating death. Mattie is now thrown into reliving each girls death, and each ghost specifically wants Mattie to endure the pain. The one occurring theme of their murders being Mattie Hathaway is the reason they’re dead.
Mattie meets her father Zeke – a dangerous, secretive and endearing man. He appears to either scare or draw in others around him. But Mattie is faced with not only fear, but comfort knowing she has found her father. However with Silas in her ear telling her Zeke is not to be trusted, where does that leave Mattie.

I found this book slower than the previous two, not so much ghost drama, but more of a book based on Mattie’s discovery and journey to find herself. Relationships were a heavy plot, I only wish the ghosts of the murdered girls were focused on more instead of the teenage drama.
The story really kicked off about 60% of the way through, with spooks, chills and murders. At this point I was engrossed, it’s a shame it took that long but I am glad I kept reading because that cliffhanger has me wanting to read the next instalment. Which might I add is already downloaded on my kindle.

Perhaps Apryl Baker didn’t do as well with this instalment, however it is a crucial part of the series, and leaves more questions than answers.
I still stand by my previous reviews of this series that these books are a must read, and I would read again. On the other hand, even though Apryl Baker is skilled at writing, I wish this book was perhaps thought out better with a focused plot line, rather than jumping in and out of relationships.

I gave this book 3/5 stars – it was likeable but tedious. Please meet my hopes of the next instalment being better.
