Book Review – Archangel’s War

Return to New York Times bestselling author Nalini Singh’s darkly passionate Guild Hunter world, where human-turned-angel Elena Deveraux, consort to Archangel Raphael, faces a new challenge that threatens the balance of the world.
Wings of silver. Wings of blue. Mortal heart. Broken dreams. Shatter. Shatter. Shatter. A sundering. A grave. I see the end. I see. . . .

The world is in chaos as the power surge of the Cascade rises to a devastating crescendo. In furiously resisting its attempts to turn Elena into a vessel for Raphael’s power, Elena and her archangel are irrevocably changed. . .far beyond the prophecy of a cursed Ancient.
At the same time, violent and eerie events around the world threaten to wipe out entire populations. And in the Archangel Lijuan’s former territory, an unnatural fog weaves through the land, leaving only a bone-chilling silence in its wake. Soon it becomes clear that even the archangels are not immune to this deadly evil. This time, even the combined power of the Cadre may not be enough. . . .
This war could end them all.

Review

Format – kindle – Bought the paperback as well ( BOUGHT BOTH VERSIONS)

I along with many other readers waited for this book to finally come out. It felt like the longest year in history, Archangel’s war is number 12 in the Guild hunter series.
Overall I liked the book, I can’t say it was my favourite from the series, that spot will always be saved for the first 3 in the series.
The story line still focuses on an ever growing war, but with plenty of twists and turns, Nalini knows how to keep her readers engaged with her ever changing characters. Each book focuses on many different characters, with the sole focus coming back to Elena and Raphael.

The beginning felt slow, I just wanted to find out what happened to Elena, what has she turned into? and how is Raphael?. On the other hand I see what Nalini was achieving by keeping her readers in suspense.

Once the story line kicked back in I was thrown back into friendships, love and war. I missed the funny banter between characters, so to see such a serious book have it’s funny moments pleased me.
The ending was so well thought out, the descriptive writing, bringing in so many characters into each chapter, and bouncing back and forth between the war of New York.

“I cannot see how you can use it in battle.” Raphael rubbed his jaw. “Perhaps you can grow sudden trees in the path of enemy angels. Boom, smack. Truly, it is a power most terrible.”

Elena and Raphael have grown so much together over the series, especially Raphael. To read such a powerful Archangel learn sarcasm and become that little bit “mortal” at heart shows growth and strength.
I can’t believe there will be 3 more books in the series, I cannot possibly think what else Nalini can bring to this fantasy world.

I still hold this series close to my heart and keep the whole series on my book shelf.

Archangel’s War Release dates

Sept 24 – USA/CANADA
Sept 26 – International

“We watch,” the Primary said. “We protect.”

But things were altering in front of them, a faint glow emanating from where the aeclari had been before the filaments obscured both Raphael’s body and Elena’s chrysalis.

Beyond the balcony doors now partially covered with the snow silk of the filaments, the Bluebell turned. His eyes widened at seeing the ocean of filaments, the glow. But before he could open the closed doors, a familiar voice entered all their minds.

Leave now. It was an order from an archangel. Clear the skies above. Empty the land around. GO.

The Legion were moving even as the last word echoed in their minds. They were Raphael’s Legion, Elena’s Legion, and they had been given an order. The Bluebell wasn’t Legion. He was one of the Seven. Unique. With his own mind.

Torment wrenched his features, but he inclined his head, and the Primary saw him form the word, “Sire.”

All of them moved.

The Bluebell dropped to the grass, then ran inside the house.

The Legion broke into four parts and swept the area. Winged beings were already flying toward the river at high speed, their faces stark and their jaws determined. The Legion dropped down in front of cars moving on the nearest road. The cars were not so close to the aeclari’s home, but the archangel hadn’t said how far to clear.

When the first two cars halted with a screech that caused a burning scent to rise to their nostrils, the Legion wrenched the doors open and hauled the startled vampires out. A group of the Legion rose into the air, two to a vampire. Another group found four humans in a third car, a vampire’s cattle heading home. The scared cattle whimpered at being taken by the Legion but didn’t struggle. Neither did the vampires after they saw the angels racing from the Enclave to the water.

Golden light poured out from the windows of the aeclari’s home.

Many of the angels streaming over the water held vampires or humans in their arms, getting their households out of danger. The Bluebell was one of the last to fly out of the Enclave, and though the Legion did not speak to many outside of the aeclari, they spoke to him: Are the aeclari’s people safe? This was important. The Legion knew. The aeclari had bonds to those who lived in the house.

Yes, I got them out. The Bluebell, who could fly faster than the Primary and sometimes raced with the cars of the Blade and the Viper, fell off the cliff with his wings licked by a golden light so bright that it was difficult to face. In one hand, he held a large rectangular thing, in his other items they recognized.

Several of the Legion flew to him, and took the things. They did not understand things, but these were linked to the aeclari in their mind. We will fly them to the Tower.

Most of the angels kept on flying toward Manhattan, and those of the Legion that carried vampires or mortals kept on going, too. But the Primary turned once he was over the center of the river, as did those of his brethren who flew only their own bodies.

The Bluebell halted in front of them, the silvery blue of his wings spread and his face awash in the burning golden light that had turned the river to gold.

And the light, it grew, and grew, and grew.

Until at last, the light was so bright that it became fire and even the Primary couldn’t bear it and threw up his arm in front of his eyes. The last thing he saw was an intense white brightness.

Archangel’s Prophecy Review.

 My Review

Goodreads – Archangel’s Prophecy
Genre: Fantasy, paranormal, Romance.
Pages: 372
Published: October 30th

Eeek!! the time has come to review this AMAZING book.  I read it in a day, and oh my god.  That’s all I can say.
I don’t think I can wait until 2019 for the next one.

The book jumps back into the lives of both Elena and Raphael.
Elena is Raphael’s consort, but trained hunter who still works with the Guild, alongside her best friend Sara.

Elena is one kick ass Heroine in all the books she features in, hence Raphael’s attraction to her from the beginning.
Raphael is a powerful Archangel in charge of New York City, he begins to grow with more angel fire within becoming stronger and stronger in each book, ready to fight in the Cascade.
The love between these two is undeniably strong, since she is the first angel in thousands of years turned from mortal to immortal by the kiss of ambrosia Raphael  produced.  Read the first book to see their love begin.   Elena makes Raphael that little bit more mortal at heart.

In the beginning Elena’s vampire brother in law is attacked, left close to death, which also threatens her sister and niece.  The story follows Elena tracking down the culprit and uncovering dark truths, as well as battling her own fears of weakening.

Elena begins to hear an ancient voice in her head, over and over again telling her of a prophecy.  A part of the Prophecy is an immortal must die…..
“You must for the other to live”.  But of course Elena is not having any of that, she makes her future with Raphael, the Cascade will not control them.
Owls begin to appear to only her, lint starts to grow from her skin, the legion state the pain she is feeling will not kill her but be part of her “Becoming”.

Her wings become weaker, she loses weight at an incredible rate, and her rate of healing becomes like that of a mortal.  The healers are baffled and so is Raphael.  Raphael is furious and worried, for him there is no world without Elena if she dies, he would give into the darkness and fall within himself if anything happened to her.
He just makes me swoon every time he tells her “Elena mine”, or “Hunter – mine”.

But the real heart wrenching part of this book is 3/4 of the way through.  Probably the first time in a long time I have cried in a book.  This is when the book really changes and the fate of these two becomes unsure.

Since reading reviews from others who received an ARC, the ending has been a widely debated topic.  Everyone was going on about a cliffhanger.  There has been mixed reviews, people refusing to read the series after the ending..  I did not find the ending a cliffhanger, but more of a genius way of Nalini Singh keeping her readers hooked for the next instalment.  I for one am so upset, confused, intrigued to see where book number 12 takes us.  Will the fight of the Cascade begin.  What happens with these two.
Once again Nalini has not disappointed.

5 Stars for this book

Book Blurb

Midnight and dawn, Elena’s wings are unique among angelkind…and now they’re failing. The first mortal to be turned into an immortal in angelic memory, she’s regressing. Becoming more and more human. Easier to hurt. Easier to kill.

Elena and Raphael must unearth the reason for the regression before it’s too late and Elena falls out of the sky. Yet even as they fight a furious battle for Elena’s very survival, violent forces are gathering in New York and across the world.

In China, the Archangel Favashi is showing the first signs of madness. In New York, a mysterious sinkhole filled with lava swallows a man whole. In Africa, torrential monsoon rains flood rolling deserts. And in Elena’s mind whispers a haunting voice that isn’t her own.

This time, survival may not be possible…not even for the consort of an archangel.

About the Author

I’ve been writing as long as I can remember and all of my stories always held a thread of romance (even when I was writing about a prince who could shoot lasers out of his

eyes). I love creating unique characters, love giving them happy endings and I even love the voices in my head. There’s no other job I would rather be doing. In September 2002, when I got the call that Silhouette Desire wanted to buy my first book, Desert Warrior, it was a dream come true. I hope to continue living the dream until I keel over of old age on my keyboard.

I was born in Fiji and raised in New Zealand. I also spent three years living and working in Japan, during which time I took the chance to travel around Asia. I’m back in New Zealand now, but I’m always plotting new trips. If you’d like to see some of my travel snapshots, have a look at the Travel Diary page (updated every month).

So far, I’ve worked as a lawyer, a librarian, a candy factory general hand, a bank temp and an English teacher and not necessarily in that order. Some might call that inconsistency but I call it grist for the writer’s mill.

Advance Excerpt from Archangel’s Prophecy
by Nalini Singh

(Because this excerpt is from my working draft, it’s subject to change )

Taking another breath while trying not to notice the electric prickling on her face, Elena triangulated the source of the scent to a particular cabin. She’d just stepped foot in that direction when the electricity vanished.

The birds stopped singing.

The air froze.

And the earth trembled under her feet.

She came to a halt. An unknown sound made her look up. The starlings were circling in a constant wheel as they whispered their frantic and incomprehensible warning inside her skull.

The ground jolted violently.

Bunching her wings and gritting her teeth against the renewed pulse of pain, she rose up off the shaking landscape. Cabin doors flew open below her, people spilling out like disoriented ants to run in the direction of the lawn.

The ground under the cabins began to crumble.

Elena swept down to grab a young woman who was a frightening half step ahead of the disappearing earth. Elena wasn’t strong enough to carry a full-grown adult any real distance, but she managed to haul the woman to where the other guests could grab her, then yelled at everyone
to go farther.

A scream split the air.

Elena twisted back…to see a man, his arms and legs flailing, disappear into nothingness. The ground had opened up under his feet in a rushing crash of dirt and rock. She flew toward him as fast as she could, but it was a futile effort.

Even as she reached the spot where he’d disappeared into the stygian maw of the earth, the sprawling and chillingly deep hole began to fill with a golden-red flow of magma. There was no sign of him, no sign of any of the cabins. Not even a smear of flesh or a splinter of wood.

The ground stopped shaking.

The earth stopped crumbling.

The birds danced.

Directly below Elena glowed a wound in the earth that pulsed with scalding heat.

All at once, there were no more starlings in the sunlit winter sky. Only screaming, sobbing people on the grass-heavy ground near a lava pit that shouldn’t exist…and Elena’s left wing was beginning to drag.

Book Review

I am back and out of my reading funk/slump.  And what better way to come back with a review than with my FAVOURITE book series!  And yes I am super excited.  If you have followed me for a while I have pretty much reviewed this series every time a new book is released, my first couple reviews I used YouTube so won’t be able to share them.  This is #10 in the Guild Hunter series.  If you love fantasy, paranormal, romance then get into this series.  If you haven’t then you need to, TRUST ME.  Nalini Singh never fails to impress me with this series.

Here are a link to my other reviews:
Archangels storm : book by Nalini Singh  #5
Archangels Legion book review    #7
Archangels Enigma: book review    #8
Archangels Heart Book review    #9

I would say you need to read the series to truly understand the story.  All the characters are the same throughout, but each book focuses on a specific character/characters.  There is a story that runs alongside all of the books, that’s why I said you need to read them all.

arnold-samuel-480a941

I was intrigued in Holly and Venom’s story.  These two have been featured since the beginning Angel’s Blood  #1.  This book is set 4 years after Holly’s dreaded attack and Uram’s takedown.
I was surprised to see that Archangel’s Viper does not follow on from the previous book but it explained what happened in New York while Raphael (Arcahngel of NewYork) and Elena (His consort) were out of the city.   Not going to lie I really really wanted to read about Raphael and Elena again even if it was a small chapter but Venom and Holly did not disappoint.  Maybe we will see Raphael and Elena next.

slider-uk-archangels-viper-750x375

Holly Chang AKA Sorrow was tainted by Archangel Uram four years ago, when being forced to feed from him.  She is a new unknown vampire whom Venom, Dmitri and the tower are trying to train and learn from.
Holly used to call herself Sorrow after her change, she was damaged, destructive and terrified, haunted with the past and the devastation Uram left behind.  Making her an unknown threat.  But her family and the Tower have brought her out of her depression.
Holly is vampire with deadly Venom, but small “Baby fangs”, with part archangel hidden within, who else was going to teach her new skills other than Venom himself.

I enjoyed learning about her growth and the relationships she developed within the Tower, especially when it comes to Dmitri.  He came across as a father figure.  Holly is a strong woman trying to adjust to having to be under control by the tower, however when it comes to Dmitri he is the only person who can get through to her, exactly like a dad would.  Everyone else she just likes to test their patience.

My favourite quote between Holly and Dmitri:

“You’re asking me to execute you. A father should never have to execute a child under his care.” – Dmitri

Venom another unique vampire changed hundreds of years ago.  He gets the nickname Viper due to the look of his eyes, always covered in dark sunglasses( I wish there was a photo).  He is intimidating just to look at, however Holly just finds him annoying, they have a funny hate/tolerate relationship where Venom loves to wind up Holly with cute nicknames “Hollyberry”, “Kitty”.  And Holly calls him “Viper face”.

On Venom’s return he is collected by Holly, on their ride back to the tower they are ambushed by an SUV with a bounty to retrieve Holly for £5 million.

Nalini is a fantastic author who can really express her characters and their feelings.
I really got that Venom was annoyed, in the 2 years he was gone he expected his team to train Holly, he only had contact with her once a week to see how she was progressing mentally. Even though the tower continued her physical training and testing they held her back.  They both produce deadly Venom which when combined together cancel each other out.  Who else is better than Venom to get her to release her inner snake like abilities.

archangels2bviper2bq22b-2bcopy

With the effects of the Cascade Holly begins to develop new skills which she refuses to tell to Venom, inner voices and the glowing acid green wings growing inside, waiting to be released, her fear is being killed.   As Venom spends more time with Holly protecting her from the bounty, he notices her secrets, and tries to unravel his Kitty.  Is she a potential threat?, what is really happening inside her head?

“What I don’t understand is why anyone would want to kidnap a kitty with baby vampire teeth”. -Venom

The relationship between these two was the best.  Some reviews online have shown other readers were disappointed that when Venom and Holly did get together it was fast and rushed…. I felt the opposite, the book focused on  Holly, the depth in their relationship, Holly learning who/what she is and Uram.
I liked that Nalini Singh referred back to the previous books briefly as a refresh, but it helped follow the story.
My only point was that I wish there was more for these two.  I was left on such a high.  I cannot wait to see what is next.

A new book will be released in 2018.  There appear to be 2 planned books coming in the Guild Hunter series.
