EXCERPT

Few men could resist the sight of a pretty girl crying. Even if she was crying blood. She broke the silence first, her voice silken, low, a seduction in the growing dark. “What does it taste like?” He’d ceased chewing. And he wasn’t breathing again. Snap out of it, Dax. Stop thinking with your dick. Forcing himself to inhale deeply, he filled his lungs then exhaled in a smooth, slow stream through his nostrils. He tried to ignore her scent, but it had intensified upon her waking, stroking his senses. “Sour,” he replied. “Sweet.” “Sweet,” she repeated, her eyes settling on his mouth. He wasn’t any better, staring blatantly at hers. The tips of her pearly white fangs flashed every time she spoke, and God, he was supposed to be disgusted, but he was far from it. Focus.

Review

What I enjoy most about this series is it’s continuity. Each book focuses on a new perspective, a new plot, however links back to the previous characters therefor giving more depth and meaning. Vermilion lies’ plot follows Ciny/Cindel discovering herself. Cindy starts as a shy “used, tortured” soul, however by the end she is a new woman, all thanks to Dax and his guidance.

Cindel is a very tortured character, broken from years of abuse, feeling beaten and worthless. That is until she meets Dax, a hybrid with a sudden need to protect this vampire, a leech. Going against his better judgement Dax begins to find solace in this woman. However the lies and previous bonds are nothing compared to the new challenges these two now have to face.

I found this book to have a slower start than the previous two. I do not blame that on L.D Rose’ writing style, in fact the authors skilful writing has kept me engrossed from start to finish in other books she has published.
I believe the beginning was slow due to the amount of introduction, dialogue and content needed to explain Cindy/Cindel’s background, as well as the way Dax and Cindy meet.
Although slow, it was essential for the story, well thought out and structured.

About 40% of the way through I was extremely interested, the book had taken a dangerous and passionate turn. I loved the banter between Dax and his friend Kayne. My favourite part being Dax trying to impersonate an irish accent to annoy Kayne, this scene in particular even had me giggling out loud. And the banter does not stop there, Dax continues to push the buttons of his fellow “brothers” throughout the book.

Overall I enjoyed the stories behind the characters, especially Cindel. She grew so much throughout the book, not only impressing herself but her peers.
I enjoyed this book and give it a 4/5 stars. I very much loved the previous books, especially number 1 with Blaze as the lead male – this being my particular favourite.

Current read: Black Bullet

Black Bullet book 2Black Bullet by L.D.Rose

Fledgling vampire Jonathan Kerr has just met his match.

Not even his past life as a former Marine and FBI agent could prepare him for the battle against the monster inside him, struggling to take hold. After an old nemesis of the Senary surfaces in Brooklyn, unleashing chaos and terror in the battered borough, Jon sets out to take him down. Instead, he ends up with far more than he bargained for when he clashes with the beautiful half-vampire hybrid, Lawan Knight.

After escaping near death and suffering unspeakable horror at the hands of vampires, Lawan trusts no one, regardless of species. In between bouts of drunken stupor, her only goal is to exterminate all those who’ve wronged her, including every member of Jon’s vampire bloodline. But Jon’s soulful eyes and quick smile crawls under her skin, transforming her black and white world into a hazy shade of gray.

As the days rapidly grow darker, Jon and Lawan turn to one another, but their inner demons threaten to tear them apart. The only way either of them will survive is if they overcome their greatest fear–

Love.

Book Review: Releasing the Demons

Releasing the DemonsBlaze Knight has been through hell and back, but the nightmares aren’t over yet.

Five years after Blaze was maimed by Cyrus Chimola, a powerful vampire with a penchant for torture, he’s still trying to pick up the pieces of his shattered life. As a genetically engineered mercenary with the ability to bend fire to his will and to see in infrared, Blaze’s mission is to protect what’s left of humanity. When Chimola and his crew return to the Bronx gunning for Blaze’s blood, Blaze is forced to face the demons of his past. Hell-bent on revenge, he seeks the help of Valerie Medeiros, an NYPD detective who manages to steal his heart and save his life in more ways than one.

Motivated by her sister’s gruesome death, Valerie has made it her life’s goal to bury every vampire in the ground where they belong. When she brings in Blaze Knight for suspected murder, she discovers he’s not only innocent, he isn’t a man at all-he’s a half-vampire hybrid working with a band of brothers for the U.S. military. Valerie has a hard time trusting anything with fangs, yet she quickly falls headlong into Blaze’s life, a life full of darkness and horror she can’t even begin to fathom. The bodies are stacking up, but Valerie can’t seem to let go of this hybrid, a beautiful monster filled with pain, rage, and passion unlike anything she’s ever known.

In a world where the line between good and evil is blurred, Blaze and Valerie will find danger at every turn, risking everything they’ve come to know and love, including one another.

Blaze Knight:

A tall, 250 pound tattoo’d hybrid who vows to not let the Leech inside of him kill anyone else.
Blaze was a science experiment which made him half human and half vampire, therefor creating a hybrid, however, Blaze is not a normal Vampire, aside from having his human side.  Blaze can control fire that’s his “Superpower”, he helps clean up the mess that vampires leave behind at night, and saves as many people threatened by vampires on his journey.
His vow is to finally destroy Cyrus who subjected him to the worst 7 months of his life, brutally tortured and forced to become the leech he has inside, by killing humans that were thrown at him in captivity.

Valerie Medeiros

Valerie is a strong independent woman who works for New York’s police department as a detective.
She spends all her time fighting what humans fear in the dead of night, Vampires, along with her partner Deron Williams.
Valerie is working what she feels is a normal case of a woman killed by a vampire, however on seeing the crime scene the young woman was burned.
She focuses mainly on work, however is blown away when she is forced to meet Blaze.
Valerie suffered a great loss when she was 10, her 8 year old sister left the house in the middle of the night, and died in the hands of a vampire.  Valerie had to watch her mum go crazy while her dad then suffered from lung cancer and died.  If that wasn’t enough her mum’s psychosis made her violent, aggressive which led to Valerie admitting her mum to a home where she soon passed away.

Overall

Valerie and Blaze meet under unwanted circumstances.
Valerie believes Blaze is the main suspect in her murder case where a young woman was killed by a Vampire however went up into flames.
Blaze is released by his brother Rome, Rome a hybrid can wipe and read the minds of everyone in the precinct, he ensures everyone forgets Blaze was there and places a false file in place.
Valerie is furious and ends up having to take leave from the force as her boss thinks the job has finally got to her, and encourages a break.  After all we would look crazy if we started shouting at everyone for forgetting what just happened.

Valerie takes the case into her own hands however, she meets Blaze on the journey again, he explains everything about his day job but keeps his tortured past to himself.
They’re both subjected to violence and forced to face more than they can handle.
Whilst finding they want more from each other than they first thought.

I loved this book, took me a while to get into due to my workload however, I loved the mixture of Romance, Fantasy, Action and Forensics.
L.D Rose perfectly captured everything you could ever want in a book in Releasing the Demons.
I was left wanting more and cannot wait to read the second book in the series.
I really enjoyed how Valerie becomes the hero of the book instead of the male lead which tends to happen in other books I read.
